The Family Therapy Training Institute of Miami™ congratulates all 27 winners of the 2009 Science and Service Awards announced by SAMHSA on September 25. We are especially happy for one of our partnered sites in BSFT implementation, Carroll County Local Management Board and Carroll County Youth Service Bureau, Inc. for their Brief Strategic Family Therapy winning entry. “Families and individuals deserve the most effective services possible for the prevention and treatment of health conditions, including mental health and substance use disorders,” said SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick, D.D.S, M.P.H. “These award winners have demonstrated that they are delivering such services in their communities.” Carroll County Local Management Board and Carroll County Youth Service Bureau, Inc. jointly won by showcasing in their application their successful implementation of Brief Strategic Family Therapy. This BSFT program began 3 years ago when they selected FTTIM™ for training, implementation, and monitoring. They partnered with the Family Therapy Training Institute of Miami to obtain their BSFT Certification, and create an in-house Lead Supervisor. Because they "believe in the power of healthy families", said Mary Scholz, Carroll County LMB., they researched several evidence based practices before selecting BSFT as the centerpiece of their services offerings. They knew the model has been tested and is effective with elementary, middle, and high school youth and is both a prevention and intervention model. They wanted to prevent serious behavioral and situational outcomes by intervening early with youth and their families. LMB chose the Family Therapy Training Institute of Miami for several reasons, including the direction, training, and dedication of its staff Master Trainers orchestrated by the co-developer/co-author of BSFT, Olga Hervis. LMB stated on their award application: " As evidenced by the accumulating body of research on the implementation of evidence-based practices, this training, monitoring and close work with the model developer is an essential component of attaining viability, effectiveness and s At FTTIM we are very proud of the success of Carroll County LMB. They have achieved wonderful positive results in their community, maintaining a sustainable BSFT program due to "stick-to-it-tiveness", persistence, and creativity in funding and staffing. Mary Scholz confirms that there is no better reward than having the ability to effectively serve families in their community.
