Olga E. Hervis
Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) and Family Effectiveness Training (FET) are the cornerstone training programs offered by the Family Therapy Training Institute of Miami (FTTIM).
FTTIM takes great pride in providing certification training on these award-winning evidence based practices, both co-developed by our Director Olga Hervis.
Our goal is to maximize the effectiveness of treatment of troubled children and adolescents by all relevant community, social service, and mental health care givers.
The Family Therapy Training Institute of Miami has earned an excellent reputation for its dedication and leadership in providing quality training and consultation to the behavioral health community. FTTIM's commitment to help organizations implement viable and sustainable Brief Strategic Family Therapy and Family Effectiveness Training programs is evidenced by its achievements. In its short 7 year history, FTTIM has trained over 1,000 individuals in multiple sites across 35 states. Several factors speak to FTTIM's distinctiveness:
In addition, Hervis created the BSFT Adaptable Version (BSFT-AV). In this manner she developed the methodology for importing an evidence based practice (EBP) from the research arena to the practice field, to service clinical populations that differ in ethnicity, in social context, and treatment environment.
At FTTIM we are passionate about the quality of training, monitoring, and on-going support we provide to the agencies and organizations we serve.
BSFT is a structured, problem-focused, and practical approach to treat children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 that exhibit moderate to severe behavior problems, including early drug use. FET is a psycho-educationally-based adaptation of BSFT to be utilized with younger, prevention/early intervention target populations. It target the problem behaviors of the youth as well as the way the entire family functions.
FT addresses family behavior, affect, and cognitions in order to restructure interactions and change systems. BSFT strategies and treatment plans are designed specifically for each family and are based on a structured diagnostic plan. The therapeutic process uses techniques of:
The program fosters parental leadership, appropriate parental involvement, mutual support among parenting figures, family communication, problem solving, clear rules and consequences, nurturing, and shared responsibility for family problems. In addition, the program provides specialized engagement strategies to bring resistant family members into therapy.
Training is available in the U.S. and abroad in Spanish as well as in English. We have the largest and most experienced staff of Master Trainers delivering BSFT and FET. Our training is tailored to the needs of the care-giving organizations, including to consortium of agencies that choose to participate in joint training. Our training also addresses the special clinical needs of immigrant and minority families in our communities.
